16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Queen of the Kabini Backwaters

It was a hot summer morning and the waterholes inside the Nagarhole National Park were almost dry. We sat in a safari jeep by a waterhole waiting for to see if we could get lucky. Suddenly we hear the warning calls from the langur and deer. The naturalist said, ‘today could be our lucky day’ I was excited; could it be a tiger – I wanted it to be a tiger as I had never seen one in the wild and minutes later, this regal creature appeared from the bushes. She crossed the road and slowly walked into the small waterhole and sat there for a good fifteen minutes, enthralling us.
