This Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus) is using its brush-like tongue to gather lerp – white sugary starch which is excreted by tiny aphid-like bugs feeding on eucalytus sap. Lerp is just about visible in the form of tiny white flecks on some of the surrounding leaves. In dry seasons it can accumulate as a major food-source for countless species of Australian birds... and is also enjoyed by humans!
