18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Razor's Edge

In search of jagged peaks and expansive wilderness, I recently embarked on a 10 day backcountry hiking & packrafting adventure deep in the Brooks Range of Alaska. This is my first, and perhaps favorite, image from the trip. After 2 bush flights and 4 days of trail-less hiking, I arrived at this location. A passing storm darkened the scene, but then the sun broke through and lit up the peaks in dramatic fashion. I found this lone bush in a field of scree and it contrasted perfectly with the dark blues of the scene. The upper right contains a glacier that is nearing the end of its days, but it was still beautiful to see.
