Africa is the cradle and last refuge of a large number of unique mammals. The growth and development of human settlements implies the destruction of the habitats of many of these species, and their subsistence will be threatened. This is the case of the hippopotamus, which until a few decades ago was not endangered. Its numbers have now fallen by between 10 and 20 percent.
