14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Sustainable Travel
Red eyed tree frog
While staying at an eco-lodge in the rainforest of Belize I ventured out on a guided night hike. Near the small hydroelectric generator our expert guide introduced us to numerous creatures of the night including scorpions, poisonous snakes, and a nesting nightjar. At the end of the hike we stopped at the natural wastewater treatment facility on the property where we found the elusive red eyed tree frog. Being able to see numerous endemic species on a resort property is what sustainable travel is all about.
