22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Red Side of Black ll

This portrait is a celebration of the intricacies of family heritage, embodied by my daughter Jada-Cassidy, whose red hair is her natural diadem, signifying an extraordinary variation amidst our African lineage. The serendipitous revelation that my great-grandmother also had red hair—a revelation that only came after Jada-Cassidy's birth, underlines the mysteriousness of genetics. Jada-Cassidy's face beams with youthful exuberance, radiating an inherent pride in her one-of-a-kind feature, steadfast in the face of a world that often favors uniformity. The discovery of red hair in our family history brings an added dimension and sense of connection to our rich story, emphasizing how diversity is woven into our unified identity.
