Reeds and cattails

A downpour had drenched every plant, each leaf and stem jewelled with rain-drops. What stood before me were only reeds and cattails in a lotus pond, yet they carried my mind straight to a bamboo forest and the wuxia films I love, such as Hidden Dragon and Crouching Tiger. as though something unseen crouched just beyond the grass. Bamboo forests haunt those movies like a visual refrain, steeped in atmosphere and unspoken code; so I cropped the photograph to the wide frame cinema prefers, letting the everyday reeds step into that mythic light.
