16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
Religious Festival
Followers of 18th-century Hindu saint Baba Lokenath Brahmachari observe a ritual known as Kartik Brati or Rakher Upobash every Tuesday and Saturday during the last 15 days of Bengali month of Kartik (October-November) at Lokenath temples. After a day of fasting, devotees gather in the evening, surrounded by food and lamps called prodip, to break their fast and pray for the wellbeing of relatives.
