I have always been a fan of the outstanding work by the painter Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn in the 17th century, with his incredible use of lighting within portraiture. I wanted to capture his style through photography, whilst also adding a personal twist. With the stark contrast between light and dark, we can also see the vast contradiction of two time periods interlocking, which I find really draws in the eye.
