19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Respect for Those Who Served

This photograph shows wreaths at the World War II Memorial from the 75th anniversary of D-day. The photo was taken two days after the event. At this point, the wreaths had been moved to the outside of the memorial and were leaned against the wall. Even though the event was over, the wreaths were still beautiful and I'm sure someone felt bad to remove them earlier than they had too. It was a hot day in Washington, DC so there were kids running around and dipping their feet into the fountain to cool off. Lots of tourists were wandering around to see all of the sights. The combination of all of this activity and enjoyment of life, alongside a very peaceful memorial laid off to the side just drew me in and I knew I needed to take a picture.
