Revered abode of the dead - Mount Kinabalu, Borneo
Mount Kinabalu is the highest peak in Borneo. To many local people it’s known as the revered abode of the dead, believed to be where their ancestors spirits reside. I had spent almost two weeks on the mountain, climbing an hour each morning from camp in the hope of a clear sunrise. Each day the summit was shrouded in mist with only fleeting glimpses of the spectacular landscape. This particular morning was different, and as the sun rose I was able to take this image, revealing the stark and alien-like landscape that surrounds the summit, and glints of red morning light reflected in the granitic rock.
