Rhône Glacier

The source of the Rhône river, the Rhône Glacier in the Swiss Alps has lost around 1300 m of its length in the last 120 years due to the increasing temperature. During the warmer periods in the year, around 5 acres of the surface is covered by white blankets to reduce the melting. The trial is considered successful, as it helped reducing melting by up to 70%. The image shows the icy surface of the glacier.
