16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Ripe for the Picking

Studying architecture, in my junior year I had the incredible opportunity to take my studies abroad. What better place to study architecture where it all began, Rome! Our design program was to design a winery in Pantelleria Italy. Part of our course was to explore a handful of unique wineries across Italy and France. These experiences aided our knowledge of our own design in understanding the wine process and environmental conditions unique to each individual vineyard. One of our first wineries was Icario Winery located in Montepulciano, Tuscana. The photograph simply conveys the moment in which a group of young children are experiencing a joyful interaction with the vineyard.
