13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
Rom Sai

ElephantsWorld, a non-profit organization in Thailand, is a volunteer-run elephant rehabilitation center that cares for 15 elephants. Rom Sai, a strong bull born in the ’80s, worked as a logging elephant in Northern Thailand for 30 years until he was bought from his owner and donated to ElephantsWorld. While working in the forest, a tree branch impaled and blinded his left eye. Travelers can volunteer for days to weeks at a time to help with this remarkable sustainable travel project.
