23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Roses of Death

Sasha is a twenty-year-old gay man who works in a tiny flower shop in Saltivka, Kharkiv's most heavily bombed district. While he's arranging bouquets, Russian missiles scatter the "Roses of Death" around. This is what the people of Kharkiv call the star-shaped marks left on the ground by bombs. I found the nearest "rose" 35 meters from Sasha's flower booth. In the photograph, he stands over it with a bouquet he arranged himself.
