Sailing Staurolite
Polarized light photomicrograph a 30-µm-thick “thin section" of a rock collected near Taos, New Mexico, USA. The image shows a purple crystal of staurolite resembling a sail, immersed in a myriad of crystals of quartz and muscovite mica that seem to paint a wavy sea and a green sky.
