19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
Saint Matthews Church, Normanton, Rutland UK

Rutland water is a popular place to visit. 1 standout attraction is the Church by the water's edge. The church was de-consecrated in 1970, & was to be demolished as part of the reservoir construction, as its floor was below the proposed water level. Public outcry lead to the lower half being filled with stone and rubble, & a concrete cap constructed just below the level of the windows. An embankment was built around the church leaving it as a feature there.
