Sakurajima, The Sleeping Giant

Sakurajima, one of the most active volcanoes in Japan, is both a natural landmark and a constant reminder of the region’s volcanic power. It frequently erupts and emits clouds of ash high into the sky, which can cover the nearby city of Kagoshima in a fine gray dust. The volcano’s proximity means residents live with ongoing precautions and well-practiced evacuation plans, balancing everyday life with respect for the mountain’s unpredictable nature.
