Salt Dream

At sunset, Utah’s Great Salt Lake becomes a mirror of shifting color, where clouds reflect on dense, glowing pink brine. Along a new shoreline exposed by decades of reduced inflow, people wade out and float almost weightlessly, enjoying a beach created by a shrinking lake. Photographed from a small aircraft, the scene shows a lake that was once one of North America’s great saline seas and is now at historic lows as water diversions and a warming climate accelerate its decline—a landscape where beauty and warning occupy the same frame.
