Salt Pyramids of Bonaire

Bonaire is a small island in the Dutch Caribbean. Aside from being an excellent snorkel and dive destination, Bonaire is famous for its salt. Seawater is channeled into pans, where the water evaporates and the salt crystalizes. The high levels of salt in the pans promote the growth of salt-loving microorganisms with reddish pigmentation, giving the water a pink hue. The salt is stacked in pyramids during the drying process.
