Salt wells Honaunau Bay shoreline.

Native Hawaiians carved shallow basins or wells into lava rock at the shoreline to capture salt at low tide. Salt, or Pa’akai was used to preserve food, for medicine and for cultural and religious practices. These lie within the Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historic Park, Honaunau, Hawaii.
