samana santa

A shaved ice vendor is working on a square during semana santa in Managua, Nicaragua. Samana santa translates to the holy week in Spanish. It is celebrated in the week leading up to easter. people carry large statues depicting easter stories through the streets. I saw this ice cream vendor selling his ice cream on the square and framed him in front of the statue of the holy cross. for me this picture perfectly encapsulates the country of Nicaragua. A largely catholic and busy country shaped by conflict. the colours in the image also resemble the flag of the Sandanista political party (red and black), who led the movement against the American occupation of Nicaragua.
