23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
San Francisco from Treasure Island
Man-made Treasure Island was created to house the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition, San Francisco's answer to the New York World's Fair held the same year. After spending decades as a US Navy facility, today it is being redeveloped as "San Francisco's newest neighborhood." In this end-of-day shot, construction equipment on Treasure Island frames San Francisco's skyscrapers, a cityscape perpetually in transition.
