22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Sandhill Silhouettes

Dusk was swiftly approaching and I knew any minute the park ranger would come by in the truck to remind me that the park was closing and to head back to the parking lot. I was initially heading towards the parking lot until I spotted these three Sandhill Cranes standing atop a hill right next to the gravel trail about 50 yds from me. The evening light was so lovely this day, I simply couldn’t pass up the opportunity to photograph the trio. On my way to the birds I was indeed confronted by the park ranger, who after talking to me drove straight towards the birds. Much to my surprise, the birds didn’t move an inch when the vehicle passed them and I was able to snap a few silhouette shots of the birds before truly heading home. I love the contrast of the birds with the beautiful coloration of the sky, was truly a memorable evening at one of my favorite local parks.
