Sanjūsangen-dō Visitors

Sanjūsangen-dō is a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan, run by the the Tendai school of Buddhism. The photograph depicts visitors walking along a perimeter gate opposite the Hall with Thirty Spaces Between Them which houses a sculpture of the temple's main deity, Sahasrabhuja-arya-avalokiteśvara. The deity is surrounded on both sides by one thousand life-size statues of the Thousand Armed Kannon. These remarkable statues are a National Treasure of Japan and photography is not allowed.
