12th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
Saqqara Tombs

An early part of our Egyptian tour included a trip to the ancient burial grounds of Saqqara. While not as dramatic as the Giza Pyramids this picture shows the excavation of large burial grounds as well as earlier and somewhat unsuccessful atempts at pyramid building, as seen on the right of the picture. I took three shots to make up this panorama post production. What I find most interesting is the inclusion of the donkey which as it became more evident is still used to transport heavy loads of produce and people even in the cities.
