22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Sarajevo, Bosnia #2

An elderly woman gazes out of her window in Sarajevo's Aflikovac district, where her building still bears the unrepaired scars of bullet holes from the Bosnian wars of the 1990s. Over 30 years have since passed since the Yugoslav and Bosnian wars began, and despite the Dayton Accords bringing an end to the conflict in 1995, the cityscape remains marked by bullet holes and shell craters in building facades and pavements.
