23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Wildlife
Sardine Snack

In the fall, millions of sardines descend upon Baja’s Pacific coast, drawn in by nutrient-rich upwelling. The result is one of the most spectacular wildlife encounters on the planet, as predators of all shapes and sizes corral the fish into enormous bait balls. Sea lions are one of the most common species at the feast, playfully darting in and out of the shimmering sardines.
