In João Pessoa, I was on my way to visit the Paraibana Academy of Letters, in the historical centre. Apart from specific touristic spots, most residences looked like that one in that area. This one called my attention amongst others because of the lives in it. Three kids were playing hide and seek and using places I would consider dangerous. But it seemed like they knew every inch of their place and felt safe to explore. When I developed the film and saw the result, a song by Adoniran Barbosa came to me. In that song, called “Saudosa Maloca”, he describes a home like that one, he and his two friend, Joca and Mato Grosso, had the best time of their lives there. However, music and poetry apart, I believe it reflects the negligence regarding housing as a fundamental right in Brazil.
