17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Scarlet Tanager in the wild.

Scarlet Tanagers do not breed in the summer or spend the winter in Texas, they only pass through during migration in the Spring and Fall. During migration, Galveston Island is the first land mass that many species of birds arrive at after flying across the Gulf of Mexico, sometimes over a thousand miles without rest. They are so focused on finding food after the long journey that they don't worry too much about spectators. This beauty was looking for insects and berries to build up his waning energy reserves.
