Scraped Up

As our boat was cruising the coast of Baja California Sur, we spotted a singular dorsal fin out in the distance—a shark, perhaps? As we got closer, we made out the distinctive shape of a hammerhead. But unlike other encounters out here, this shark wasn’t in any rush to leave. It stuck near the boat for quite some time and, after observing its behavior, we deemed it a good situation to jump in. We slowly lowered ourselves into the water and quietly finned in the shark’s direction. And to all of our surprise, she came in for a close look. And another. And another. She was incredibly curious, coming right up to my lens. We could see that she had a lot of cuts and scrapes on her body, many scabbing over. I wonder what sort of trouble she had gotten herself into - mating possibly?
