The photo is simple, and so is the story behind it. But the simplicity doesn’t take away from the essence of what it is. Here a sea lion is sunbathing unabashed and calm, as rapid waves crash on the rocky shore. It conveys the simple and genuine behavior of nature. There is no concern for disruption or fear of being caught in the tide because the sea lion knows its limits. I obviously don’t know what any animal is thinking, but in this capture, there is a peacefulness to the sea lion. Unlike ourselves, with the constant worry of what will happen next and preparing for unpredictable events, the being is unmoved by the uncontrollable current. Something that in Taoism reprsents the nature of life.
