Selfie with a sea lion

The relationship between humans and wildlife fascinates me. In San Diego, this relationship is fraught with tension. At a popular tourist spot, a colony of sea lions must contend with regular human contact. The humans who visit the beach are fascinated by the sea lions and frequently come within inches of the animals to take “selfies with the sea lions” as they haul out on the shore. This sea lion bull, the largest living being on the shore, was cornered by a group of tourists. Unknowingly, they separated him from his harem. He was desperate to get back to his family and charged forward shortly after this photo was taken. Luckily, no one was hurt. To me this photo represents a small slice of what is to come as habitat destruction continues and people and wildlife must find a way to coexist in ever-shrinking quarters.
