Sergeant Paul Kia Kandapaki

Sergeant Paul Kia Kandapaki During our stay at the Lutheran international school in Amapiaka village on the border of Wapenamanda and Wabag, I met Sergeant Paul. Sergeant Paul was assigned to travel with us on our bus to the Enga cultural show. He was the first to show up in full uniform. Introduced himself and was keen to be our tour guide for the day. How is it that your attached to the school? “ I am a land owner here, there are five of us officers in total who live on the grounds. Apart from our community duties, we offer a form of security to the school. The school is an important part of the community so we need to be here to protect the it from tribal ware fare”. Why did you choose to be a police officer? “ It was the respect the community had for law and order that drove me to become a police officer. I became a police officer in 1968, my first post was in Vanimo. I am retired now, however, I still put on the uniform as an auxiliary officer. Being a land owner here also helps me carry out my duties”. Are any of your children Police officers or are willing to don the uniform? “ Its not like before, when I was a kid my peers and I aspired to be police officers. Times have changed”.
