Sevanavank Monastery on Lake Sevan, Armenia

I used my one free day during a work trip to Armenia in 2015 to see the sites outside of Yerevan. Armenia was the first nation to adopt Christianity as the official religion so I knew I would be in for a day of early Christian architecture and relics. At the very end of the day, when my guide insisted that we stop at one more such site, I wasn't overly eager. Was I surprised when we arrived! This medieval monastery atop a peninsula (formerly an island) on Lake Sevan took my breath away even in a country overflowing with natural and ancient architectural beauty.
