19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
Sewing Group of Malela

I am an American living and working in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Later I enhanced the photos to appear more like watercolor paintings. These images are then printed on canvas and displayed. I have the privilege of witnessing life in rural areas. Taking photos is my way of capturing, recording, and sharing my experiences. It is my way of honoring a culture and the people. This is a group of women I met in the small village of Malela, Kwilu Province, DRC. They share two sewing machines which are most often set up under a large mango tree. The limbs of the tree hold the array of beautiful fabric used in the clothes.
