Shadow Twins in Carmelita's Garden

"Ok, ok! One last picture." These are their looks after playing in my grandmother's garden all afternoon. Twins Alondra and Alexander live with their mother and older sister in the house across the street. Their mother works the graveyard shift at the local hospital in the rural town of Bunkie, Louisiana - my home town - where racism undulates and pulls like a strong undertow. Just in the backyard of my grandmother's was an old slave home, recently torn down. Whites and blacks have begun to run together, whether the old generation is willing to embrace this change or not. It's a beautiful, strange world from up here and down there.
