Shadows of oppression

Light and shadow create a stark visual contrast at the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama. The Memorial commemorates victims of lynching across the United States. The light was intense that day. The volume of metal boxes suspended from the ceiling -- each one representing one or more lynching victims -- was overwhelming. Those structures literally cast long shadows that extended to the present moment. Yet there was still an intense light that found its way through.
