13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
Shock'd

The purpose of this photo is to project a certain feeling into the viewer. The bright, washed out lighting partners with the images of a pill bottle and a wide open eye to create an acidic, sterile feel. The photo depicts dry fingers slightly covered in the cold white powder of an unknown drug as a pill is carefully extracted from the bottle. This represents the mindless habitual motion of the addict as freedom of choice fades away. A wide open eye displaying a vividly colored iris represents the artificially obtained insomnia and hyperalertness of this human. The vulnerable human has been subconsciously "shock'd" in his attempt to reach the slyly flaunted 'life' which was falsely promised to him by none other than death himself.
