A blustery day in May on Jones Beach in Long Island, NY, was better suited for a walk on the beach rather than a jump in the surf. Only a few lifeguard towers were upright in the sand, although those stationed had no swimmers to watch. I found two pairs of shoes hidden under a toppled tower, left behind by a couple of beach-goers.
