The picture captures three generations of Punjabi women -oldest cousin (left), mother (middle), and eldest aunt (right)- engaging their oldest cousin, son, and nephew in a Hindu ceremony and pre-wedding event, called "Haldi" (turmeric). The groom is in the center, wearing traditional Indian clothing and headcovering while covered in a paste made of water, turmeric and chickpea flour which every family member and friend slathers him with as show of affection. This cultural pre-wedding event is a traditional part of the South-Asian communities. It is one of the many small but important traditions where the family and friends of the bride or groom gather to celebrate them, in their respective homes.
