16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World

The Capibaribe river runs deeply in the memory of the people of Pernambuco, a giant which holds, to the same extent, both natural beauty and human drama. Listen to how, with exuberance, with its “poor fecundity”, the river cascades down the hills, flowing through 40 municipalities until arriving in Recife to lap against the mangroves and fishermen’s huts.
