Orbetello lagoon is recognized as a natural oasis, a WWF reserve and a migratory passage for the famous pink flamingos. In the past, however, it has been exploited for purely industrial and economic purposes. Indeed, it is partially polluted due to the presence of mercury and other toxic substances originating from Montecatini mining and chemical company. Fishing is only allowed in some areas but water is almost static limiting its renovation.
