Sintra Well in Portugal This well is considered a masterpiece that attracts tourists from all over the world. It is known as the inverted well. It is located in the Portuguese city of Sintra. It takes the form of a tunnel extending underground with a depth of 27 meters, and is supported by carved columns, a spiral staircase, and nine landing strips that reach the bottom. Its construction lasted six years. It is homogeneous in a strange way, and its construction style dates back to the Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance styles. Its design also evokes references to the Divine Comedy, written by Dante, where its nine steps represent the circles of Hell and Heaven. The well leads to a garden surrounded by a lake. The inverted well is located on land called Quinta da Ragueira, which belonged to a family of rich merchants from Porto, and remained theirs until In 1892, it was purchased by Montero, who wanted to build a confusing place that would collect symbols that reflect his ideologies and interests, dating back to the baronial era.
