16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Siren

Last year I lost my camera, cell phone, and almost my life in this area. My goal this year was to finish what I started last year before a massive wave almost swallowed me off the cliff with my photography equipment. I was actually pretty terrified coming back here. I desperately wanted to face my fear of the sea to capture this beautiful scene. I feel that the sea is siren, always calling me back. The top rock is Hay stack rock, and the bottom rocks are sandstone. What I loved about this photograph is the fact the fog covered the sea, making the rock formations almost look like a mountain covered with fog under the milky way. Initially I wanted just the sea to be seen, instead of the fog. As the fog slowly crept in at 4:00AM I found it to be a blessing for facing my fear of the sea.
