SISTERS OF TURTUK

In Ladakh, life is a never ending challenge. Steep mountains, deep ravines and unending stretches of mountain deserts, with scanty rains create difficult terrains. Poverty always challenges you. This picture is of a Balti girl and her sister shot in Turtuk . Their beauty and sharp features are reminiscent of their Alexandrian descent, which even abject poverty cannot overshadow. Even before adolescence responsibilities are thrust upon them, especially on the girl child. Taking care of the sister is a norm. The beauty and innocence of her dark eyes will hold you back. They have many stories to tell. The challenges are insurmountable, poverty is deep and life is frugal, yet the smile is not lost. Love is what makes them live – the magnificent people of Ladakh.
