13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Black skimmers take off toward the Gulf of Mexico after sunset. This protected species nests on Anna Maria Island, Florida each spring, to the delight of beachgoers who watch eggs become chicks and chicks become fledglings.
