skull island

This is a topdown photo of the small volcanic island Ilhéu Vila Franco do Campo. The almost perfect circle in the middle is the result of a sunken crater. It is located about a kilomter from the south coast of the main island São Miguel in the Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal. From the shore of São Miguel, this small island looks like a rather uninteresting big rock. It is only from a topdown perspective its beauty comes out. I wonder how many people have seen this rock in the Atlantic Ocean, without realizing how astonishing it is. This shows the relevance of drones in landscape photography. To me, the topdown shape of the island resembles a big skull. That's why I call it "skull island".
