Sleeping Bee

This is a Long-horned Bee sleeping on a flower bud in a garden. Male Long-horned Bees sleep on flowers, while the females stay in their terrestrial nests. What is really interesting is that these bees return to the same plants every night and, in fact, this is the second year I have seen them in the same area, with no sign of sleeping bees anywhere else near by. Also of interest, is that I have seen up to 3 separate species of long-horned bees sleeping together. They will sleep in groups, but a few will sleep alone, as the one captured in this image. Unlike European honey bees, these native bees sleep late, not stirring until about 9am.
