Albinism is a rare genetic disorder characterized with partial or complete absence of pigment in the skin, hair and eyes. It is estimated that 1 in 20000 people in the world has albinism. In India an estimated population of hundred to two hundred thousand people suffer from this disease. The word albinism originates from the Latin word 'albus' which means white. Ironically in a world that is hugely obsessed with white skin, albinism is widely considered as impure, unattractive and obnoxious. This is Gaurav, a young boy from the city of Varanasi, India. Being born in an extremely destitute family, Gaurav is the youngest of three children and suffers from albino disease. Due to lack of awareness and socio- cultural beliefs, a lot of stigma and misconception is attached with albinism. A typical misbelief about this disease is that it is contagious and most often misinterpreted and handled insensitively. People with albinism often face social and cultural boycott and are discriminated and ridiculed due to their physical appearance. There needs to be more education and awareness among people to change their perspective towards albinism and obliterate the social and cultural stigma associated with it, in order to help every individual to live with dignity and social acceptance.
